Shuffle yourself
November 20, 2008
Zach Nielsen invites readers to share the first five tracks that pop up on their iTunes or iPod when they’re shuffled.
My results ended up looking pretty high-brow, as none of my U2, Keith Green or Donny Osmond songs came up (I’m joking about the Donny Osmond):
- “Two pieces for string quartet: No. 2 – Allegro moderato” - Aaron Copland (perf. Vanbrugh Quartet), Sextet and Piano Quarter
- “No Blues” – Miles Davis, Miles Davis in Person, Friday Night at the Blackhawk, San Francisco, Complete
- “Billy the Kid: The Open Prairie Again” – Aaron Copland (perf. Arianna Goldina and Rémy Loumbrozo), Music for Piano Duo
- “Op. 30, Andante con moto tra” – Samuel Barber (perf. Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus), Prayers of Kierkegaard
- “Put it in Your Pocket” – Joshua Redman, Momentum

About the highbrow factor, my musical tastes might be seen as such (classical, jazz, geekish indie rock, experimental artists like Steve Reich)– *until* people find out about my love of Cheap Trick and Journey! It’s all good– at least *I* think it is!
Oh, and I love Keith Green! In the decades since his his entrance into glory, Christian music has never come close to him!
Thanks for the comment, Christopher. I get a hankerin’ for classic rock myself sometimes.
Journey was the first concert I ever saw, at the Summit, in Houston, 1983 (Frontiers Tour with Bryan Adams, a newcomer then). I was 12, but already developing fine taste in music. Funny thing – I remember getting handed a Chick Track on the way into the concert by some brave Christians.
I haven’t heard of Steve Reich. I’ll have to check him out. My friend got me into jazz two years ago. I really like Brad Mehldau and Miles.
And ditto on Keith Green. What a guy, what a life.
Drop by again soon!
