Governor for Mumbai calls for Christian fortitude

December 10, 2008

At reformation21, Phil Ryken shares some quotations from the Governor of Maharashtra in India, where Mumbai is located:

“We cannot remain closeted in our prayers and our personal comforts and turn a blind eye to the persecution and the assailing of Christianity. . . At such a criticual juncture, woe is unto us if we do not preach the gospel and spread the light of holiness and righteousness in our society. . .”

“Ecclesiastical myopia: Right now counts forever”

November 11, 2008

R. C. Sproul reflects on the near-sightedness of we Western Christians:

“Here in the West, we have become immunized or inoculated against the deep things of God, living our Christian lives on a superficial plain [sic] of churchiness and religiosity. This type of Christianity will not do. It would be no surprise to me if we, in a very short time, will be looking to Africa, to eastern Europe, to Asia, and to Latin America to discover the real power of the Christian gospel.”

African Christianity (update)

November 2, 2008

Zondervan’s koinonia blog has put up a series of posts on the distinctives of the Christian church in Africa, and its theology:

Living on the Seam of History 1: African Christianity

Living on the Seam of History 2: God in Africa

Living on the Seam of History 3: African Christology

Living on the Seam of History, Part 3: The Holy Spirit

(update 10/17) Living on the Seam of History, Part 4, which examines Samuel Waje Kunhiyop’s text, African Christian Ethics.

(update 10/23) Living on the Seam of History, Part 5, on Christian-Muslim relations in Africa

(update 11/1) Part 7: Towards a Missiological and Theological Renaissance

The series takes its title from a quote by Timothy Tennent, from Theology in the Context of World Christianity:

“We are now in the midst of one of the most dramatic shifts in Christianity since the Reformation. Christianity is on the move and is creating a seismic change that is changing the face of the whole Christian movement. Every Christian in the world, but especially those in the West, must understand how these changes will influence our understanding of church history, our study of theology, and our conception of world missions.”

In 2006, Zondervan published their Africa Bible Commentary: A One-Volume Commentary Written by 70 African Scholars.

Are short-term mission trips worth the effort?

November 1, 2008

Paul Yanosy responds to a recent WSJ article that criticizes the concept (”The ‘Great Commission’ or Glorified Sight-seeing?“):

“At bottom, then, I think the article treats well this “elephant in the room” question.  Even so, I do want to push back on the assessed value of these trips.  Specifically, and even with their flaws and inefficiencies, these trips are often the best avenue for Christians to be exposed to the world.”

The Iranian church’s (atheist) advocate

October 14, 2008

Cranmer discusses the efforts of British Foreign Secretary David Miliband to bring civil liberties to Iran’s Christians:

“It is bizarre indeed when a devout atheist puts the professing Christians to shame in demanding freedom of religion.”
